Here are some of our thoughts (please listen to the podcast for a complete description):
Ambiance / description of place
Chris – Lots of red/orange and blue, some of the benches had what looked like a Mexican blanket covering the backing
Margaret – Looks like it can seat about 30. Very colourful décor
Greeting / reception
Chris – Friendly, seated at a table for four. Nacho chips with a very spicy salsa
Margaret – Friendly greeting. Man at register, waitress and cook. Appy: homemade nacho chips that I thought needed salt! Is anyone surprised that I said that. Like Chris said, the salsa was muy caliente!
Chris – Very inexpensive
Margaret – Reasonable and you get fairly large portions so there will be leftovers.
Chris – A fair amount
Margaret – Variety but … All dishes are the same to me, just cooked differently. Same ingredients, different cooking method.
Why we chose menu item
Chris – Recommended by a friend – good selection of various items.
Margaret – Thought we would try a selection of items from the menu.
Smell / look / taste of 1st course
Chris – Burrito – fairly bland – somewhat surprising. Mexican pop (fruit punch) – tastes just like carbonated fruit punch – couldn’t taste anything that made it “Mexican”
Margaret – Burrito – somewhat bland. Mexican hot chocolate – could use whipped cream, tastes like it has cinnamon which I think is why it’s called Mexican HC!
Charlotte – Chicken tostada – could use fewer tomatoes, and the chicken is salty, could use less avocado. Mango juice – sweet and I like it!
Smell / look / taste of 2nd course
Chris – Quesadilla – chicken, very tasty and a good texture. Just the right amount of sour cream.
Margaret – Quesadilla – I think I make it better!
Smell / look / taste of 3rd course
Chris – Chimichanga – getting a bit of a donair taste from the fried tortilla. Although I like donairs, this was my least favourite course.
Margaret – Put chilies to the side of my plate. To me, had no taste.
Smell / look / taste of 4th course
Chris – Enchilada is very cheesy, has a nice level of spice to it. Rice is okay, good taste but nothing special. Possibly the best refried beans I’ve ever tasted! They were smooth – you could tell that they were homemade.
Margaret – Enchilada is spicy. Rice is spicy. Beans are tasty. As you can tell, I am not a fan of spicy. If my mouth is burning, then I am not tasting anything.
Service / wait staff knowledge
Friendly staff, although they seemed a bit overwhelmed even though the place was only half full.
Overall dining experience
Pleasant, but nothing to write home about – without the podcast I don’t think it would even come up in conversation with friends.
Would we go again
Chris – No – decent, but there are so many better places to eat.
Margaret – It was on the list of places that people have recommended but not somewhere I would go again.
